1998年にGoogleを創業した、Larry Pageという男が、1999年、世界中の計算機科学の基礎研究に携わっている「天才」学生にアプローチしたらしい。 Larry Pageは、自分のいたスタンフォード大学の計算機科学の教授を5人、相談役として雇う。 その教授のネットワークで、「これは天才だ」という学生を見つける。 その全ての学生に、FedExで、スタンフォード大学の教授の手紙と、ファーストクラスの往復チケットを送る。 「是非あなたの研究について話して欲しい。パロアルトに来て話してくれませんか？」

まあ学生なら、スタンフォードの誉れ高い教授にファーストクラスのチケットを送られたら、行ってみるだろうな。 それで、Larry Pageと教授たちが「面接」する。 見事面接を通った学生たちが、本格的にアトラクトされる。 Larry Pageが、当時既に考えていた、検索エンジンの構想と、将来的にはデータマイニングの手法で、人々の生活の隅々まで入っていくサービスを確立する夢を語るのだ。

この方法で、世界中の「天才学生」にアプローチしていった、という話。

これが「天才」学生のネットワークで更に広がっていく。 採用された元学生たちは、自分の知っている「天才」たちに声をかけていく。 Larry Pageが夢を語って、アトラクトする。

こうして集められた天才学生たちは、Googleの検索エンジンの開発を成功させただけでなく、その後のGoogleの新しく、面白いサービスを次々に開発するリーダーとして活躍していったそうだ。
